Srinagar, July 25 : justice still eludes the families of three children who fell prey to the bullets of Indian troops in the intervening night of July 23 and 24 five years ago. On the fateful night Indian troops in an ambush opened bullets and fired mortar shells on four teenagers who had just walked out of the tent at the marriage function late in the night, killing three on the spot and injuring the fourth critically.
Three teenagers, Shabir Ahmad Shah, 16, son of Ghulam Hassan Shah, Waseem Ahmad, 11, son of Mohammad Sultan Wani, and Bilal Ahmad, 15, son of Abdul Khaliq died while Manzoor Ahmed Shah sustained critical injuries in the incident.
After the widespread protests against the killings, police registered murder cases against the army. Later, the police and army ordered separate inquiries into the incident. The army had termed the incident as an error of judgement and ordered court of inquiry besides providing compensation to the affected families.
Five years after the incident, families of the victims said that neither the erring troopers had been punished nor the outcome of probes had been revealed to them
