(Supreme Commander Hizb-ul-Mujahideen) Syed Salahudin His real name is Syed Muhammad Yousuf Shah. He was born at Soibug village of Budgam District 15Km from Srinagar in December 1946. His maternal grandfather, Gulla Sb, was a revered spiritual figure but father Gh. Rasool shah was simply a farmer. It was Gulla Sahib who took keen interest in Shah’s education & growth of personality and predicted that the boy would rise like a meteor. From class 9th to 11th, he studied at Govt.; Higher Secondary school Budgam and emerged as a brilliant student. He composed poetry in English, became an impressive debater, got first class in 12th class examination but failed to get admission for MBBS. He graduated in Arts from SP College Srinagar and later completed his post graduation in political science form university of Kashmir in 1971. In 1972, he was appointed as Amir-e-Tehsil Jamaat-e-Islami for Tehsil Budgam and later the chief (Nazime-Aala) of Tehreek-e-Talaba, the students wing of Jamaat-e-Islami. In 1986, he was appointed as District Amir Jamaat-e-Islami Srinagar. He got ticket for contesting Assembly elections in March 1987as the candidate of Muslim United Front (MUF), which later transformed into today’s Hurriyet Conference. Muhammad Yousuf Shah Sb. was arrested along with his MUF campaigners and poling agents just before the counting of votes and released after nine months of torture & humiliation. The particular aggression of the National Conference (NC) congress Coalition is still believed as the turning point of Kashmir’s political history as also the raisin deter of the present armed struggle. In April 1991 Mr. Shah turned into the Mujahid Salahudin and was appointed as Supreme Commander of Hizb-ul-Mujahideen, the largest militant outfit of Jammu and Kashmir’’. He is holding the position till date. He also holds the position of chairman of United Jehad Council, the Amalgam of thirteen Kashmiri Mujahideen groups. |
